Julien’s Auctions - Degrees of Separation

On June 24th, it seemed like the event of the season took place in Beverly Hills. Thanks to Johnny Otto’s connections, we were able to participate in the opening night of “Degrees of Separation”
at Julien’s Beverly Hills presented by Billy Morrison and 232am projects. Notable works by Dave Navarro, who is not only known for his art but for being a renowned musician (ex-member Red Hot Chili Peppers/current member of Jane’s Addiction).
In celebration of the progress of recent vaccinations, many people seemed eager to enjoy the art event maskless. A collaboration of Artists including RISK, Estevan Oriol, Billy Morrison, WRDSMTH,
Plastic Jesus, Meg Zany, and Dave Navarro & PADHiA (Duel Diagnosis) came together to showcase authentic new pieces, created during the lockdown of 2020.

The artworks, organized as a series of different
degrees of separation, are a diverse display of Los Angeles’s vibrant art scene. We were very impressed by the broad selection of paintings, sculptures, and photographs, created through powerful
collaborations and the resonance of the work artists and musicians have had on each other over the decades. Mentioned as one of the “highlights” of the show on Julien’s Auctions webpage is a
collaborative painting by Kelly “RISK” Graval, and Billy Morrison. The butterfly at the center of the image is a symbol of change and rebirth; it signifies the country’s struggle with the pandemic
and stands as a symbol of hope for the future. Created at The Risk Rock Studios compound, it paves the way for future artistic collaborations. At Julien’s Auctions, the painting was placed close to the entrance, drawing attention to itself.

2 Live & Die in L.A.

This year’s show will coincide with the debut of the L.A. Six— six prolific Los Angeles documentary and street photographers that have come together to give the world a unique glimpse into the lesser known reaches of Los Angeles.
Their images include 1980’s L.A. gang culture, the low rider scene of the 90’s, the hip hop generation, the Mongols Motorcycle Club, East L.A. and South Central backyard punk scenes, stunning landscapes of the city, and intimate views of Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Together, their works reveal a rare view of hidden Los Angeles.
The L.A. Six includes Estevan Oriol, Merrick Morton, Frankie Orozco, Gilbert Godoy, Angela Boatwright and Suitcase Joe.

What is an Art Squat and how did this journey begin?
Well, many many moons ago, circa 1999, my brother Michael Otto, who just prefers to be called Otto, was
friends with a guy named Andy who lived in a fourplex on Genesee ave. just south of Melrose, across from
Fairfax High school. Andy had told my brother that there was an empty two bedroom apartment on the second
level across from his and that the Landlord hadn't been seen in years and nobody was paying rent. He went
on to tel my brother that the empty unit was filled with junk that had to be cleared out but once that was
done, the space could be used as an art gallery. So, my brother and I and a few other friends, spent a few
days clearing out all the junk, and we put large locks on the doors so that nobody could enter without us.
There was no power in the unit that we occupied, so, whenever we had an art opening, Andy would run power
cables out his back window and into the empty unit. Collectively we came up with the name Art Squat for our
new gallery and we had some crazy raging parties. This went on for several years. The Landlord was never seen
or heard from. In fact, there was a garage behind the property that had a vintage car in it and boxes of
newspapers from the 80's.
